Effect of Fruit Bagging and Application of Additional Nitrogen Fertilizer on Color Development of ¢¥ Fuji ¢¥ Apples

Abstract
The effects of fruit bagging and application of N on color development and quality of `Fuji¢¥ apple fruits were studied. In the late fall of previous year 15§¸/l0a of N was applied and additional 250 and 750g of N per 15-year-old apple tree were applied in late May. In middle of June, 200 fruits per tree were wrapped with double paper bags for color improvement and a half of total number of bags removed on Sept. 20 and remainders on Sept. 30. N contents decreased slowly in leaves, moderately in peels and rapidly in fleshes as growing season advanced. Additional N did not increase N contents in leaves and fleshes throughout growing season. 750g N per tree increased N contents in peels at harvest only. Bagging of fruits decreased chlorophyll contents but increased anthocyanin in the peels. Additional N did not affect the chlorophyll contents in leaves and peels. Anthocyanin contents of peels at 750g N were lower compared with 0 or 250g N fruits in bagged fruits. Flesh firmness decreased by additional 750g of N per tree but soluble solids and total acidity were not changed. Bags can be removed between Sept. 20 and Sept. 30 for better color development and quality of apple fruits.
